Ingredients for a winter power breakfast

Just like exercising in the morning can help set the tone for a healthy food intake throughout the day, starting with a nutritious breakfast may help improve your energy and focus too. Get going with these winter warmer ingredients:


They are a great source of protein and very easy to have as part of a balanced breakfast. Mix things up a bit by going with poached or boiled instead of choosing fried and kick up the health factor by adding vitamin- and antioxidant-rich bits and pieces such as tomato, avo, orange or red pepper.


It’s the perfect stir-in ingredient to make a bowl of oats a little creamier. It contains some carbs, some protein and a little fat. Added to that, you get calcium for improving bone health and probiotics which may help keep your immune system strong.


Beans are a source of fibre and protein, and also contain magnesium which may help to improve your mood. They can be bought dry, but if you don’t have the time to cook them you can buy the tinned varieties and just rinse and drain them before use. Heat some with a little garlic, cumin and dried herbs to add to your breakfast.


These fruit mixes are still a great way to jumpstart your nutrient intake for the day – just ditch the crushed ice in winter and use milk or yoghurt to provide some liquid. Use winter fruit such as guavas which are high in vitamin C and pears which are a good source of fibre. Keep some berries in your freezer so that you can add a handful to your smoothie for an extra dose of antioxidants.
