SPAR Redhouse River Mile

Have you ever heard about Africa’s longest-running open-water swimming race? It’s the SPAR Redhouse River Mile, which aso happens to be Africa’s oldest open water swimming event, was established in 1924, making 2013 it’s 89th anniversary. The event takes place just 30km outside of Port Elizabeth, at the Cannonville slipway and features a festival for the whole family, including vendors, food stalls, crafters, exhibitors, displays, a kids zone and a Castle Lite Beer Garden.

Date: Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 February 2013

Entry Fee: R20 (kids under 12 years of age and race participants free)

Some interesting facts…

* 80-year old Mally Richards will be attempting his 60th River Mile having swum his very first river mile in 1947.

* The Festival includes the Rotary Swimarathon, an international initiative to break the world record for the most people swimming on the same day anywhere in the world…
